Organic solid waste management statistics and scenarios in various metropolitan cities

Mumbai generates about 9,400 metric tons of solid waste daily, of which 73% is food, vegetable, and fruit waste. In contrast, only 3% is plastic, said the environment status report released by the Brihanamumbai Municipal Corporation. On the other hand, Bengaluru generates around 4500MT/day of municipal solid waste (MSW) at an average of 0.5 kg/day/per capita, with about 8.4 million people. Less than 60% of waste is collected; approximately 15% is processed and dumped into landfills.

As India raised to the highest population globally, the waste produced has increased drastically, while unplanned rapid urbanization since 1990 fuels the fire. Bengaluru Solid waste management remains the second highest priority for BBMP. However, allocation on this in the 2022-23 budget has dropped to Rs 1469 crore from last year’s allocation of Rs 1622 crore. Much of this money, however, is going towards managing landfills, as shown in the chart below

Landfills are a significant reason for rising temperatures leading to climate crises. The process of composting interferes with the plastic present in it, which chokes the organic matter leading to the release of methane. Methane has over 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide. The amount of methane released has increased by 200 times since the 1700s. These landfills create a global warming effect and are a perfect breeding place for diseases like malaria, heart attacks… Another obvious challenge is that the volume of waste transported is high, leading to most of the budget going toward waste transportation.

Our approach to tackle

 1. Shredders can decrease the volume of wet and dry waste, leading to less expenditure on transportation and fuel.

 2. At-source composting, with the help of our blue composting bins, can reduce the amount of waste accumulated from households and encourage organic gardening at home. At the same time, we are bringing awareness to waste.

3. As required, Our shredders range from 100 kilograms to a few tons. At the same time, 5Hp machines are transportable due to their compactness to various locations leading to a decentralized method of waste management. The shredded material can then be cured at the source or transported to the closest composting unit. This process is odor free.

4. Garden waste like branches and leaves can be shredded and cured at source, turning monsoon-maintenance by-products to compost into compost-rich soil. Gardens will not have to get dirt from outside to revive the land. Our shredder and curing on the site will produce compost, a full-circle solution.
