Description
THE AEROBIN
An Aerobin is an aerated container needed to store segregated food waste in an odorless manner. It is useful in flats, offices, canteens any where food is being processed or consumed. It is also useful in composting small quantities as a home composter or as one of many storage points within a building before collection and sending it to a building level composter.
Construction
An Aerobin consists of two hard plastic buckets placed one inside the other.
The inner bucket may be used for temporary storage of daily food waste. It has holes at the bottom through which the liquid content of food waste (‘leachate’ or ‘compost tea’) may fall into the outer bin.
The outer bucket is used for temporary storage of the leachate. This liquid may be used in diluted form as a good fertilizer.
The Aerobin has a cover to make waste handling hygienic and a handle for ease of carrying. It comes with a Bag of cocopeat. and 1 Litre bottle of activated EM.
Sizes
The Aerobin is available in 3 sizes:
- Aero1: 5 litre
- Aero2: 10 litre
- Aero3: 20 litre
Operations
Adding daily food waste
Every day:
- Add food waste to the inner bin,
- Sprinkle drying agent (sawdust, coco peat, etc.) to completely cover the food waste.
- Sprinkle liquid or powder culture over the drying agent.
Using the leachate as fertilizer
The leachate in undiluted form is very potent and may harm the plants. The dilution ratio is 1 portion of liquid to 10 or more portions of water
USING AEROBINS FOR COMPOSTING
Composting is a two stage process which consists of: (1) fast hot composting and (2) Cold maturing of compost.
Hence for a continuous composting process two containers (bins) are required.
The complete composting process requires about 6 weeks. Each bin will be used alternately as a composting ad maturing bin, for 3 weeks each.
When used as a composting bin
Every day add food waste as described above:
When used as a maturing bin
In this stage the contents of the bin are left undisturbed to mature to final compost.
Selecting the bin size for your application
Both bins must be of the same capacity.
Select bin capacity such that it fills up with daily addition of food waste in 3 weeks.
The bin models and their daily food waste handling capacity in kg per day (kpd) are listed below.
- Aero1 (5 litre): 0.3 kpd
- Aero2 (10 litre): 0.5 kpd
- Aero3 (20 litre): 1 0 kpd.
For greater quantities of food waste you could consider using DERT Community Composters. Curing Bins/ compost tumblers which have a capacity range from 4 kpd to 200 kpd.
The two bin composting process
The first 3 weeks;
- Bin 1 is used for composting
- Bin 2 is empty.
From week 4 to week 6
- Bin 1 is used for maturing of compost.
- Bin 2 is used for composting.
After 6 weeks
- Bin 1. The material will have turned into compost. Remove the compost and use it for your plants. The bin will become empty, and could be used again as a composting bin.
- Bin 2 is used for maturing of compost.
Hence by using Bin 1 and Bin 2 alternately for composting and maturing, a continuous composting process is achieved.
